Kapyatie is a caryatid, or sculpted female figure that supports an entablature on her head instead of a column or pillar. The name Kapyatie means "carved in stone". Caryatids are mainly used for decoration.
The term karyatides comes from the ancient town of Karyai in the Peloponnese, where the priestesses of the temple to Artemis were called the caryatidai. Artemis Caryatis was an epithet of Artemis, the Olympian goddess. In pre-classical times, Carya was the goddess of the nut tree, and was later assimilated into Artemis.
Philosophers believe that caryatids symbolize courage and represent the pressure of destiny on humans. The most famous caryatids are the ones on the porch of the Erechtheion on the Athenian Acropolis.
